Naruto Strait

Naruto Strait is a strait between Awaji Island, Hyogo in the Kansai region and Tokushima in the Shikoku region. It has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Views. It is also called Onaruto. The biggest highlight is the spiral tide that is called the Naruto Whirlpool. The Naruto Whirlpools are a natural phenomenon, and are intense tides caused by the tidal range between the Seto Inland Sea and the Kii Channel. This size is greatest in spring and autumn, and the diameter reaches up to 20m. The tide of the Naruto Strait is said to be one of the “three major tides in the world” along with the Messina Strait in Italy and the Seymour Strait in Canada. At the time of the spring tide, the speed of the tide is about 20 km/h or more, which is said to be the highest speed in Japan.

Do you know Japanese manga “Naruto”? It is a ninja manga featuring a hero named Naruto Uzumaki. It is very interesting, so if you haven’t seen it, please take a look. The name of this hero, Naruto, comes from “Naruto-maki”. Naruto-maki is a kind of kamaboko with a swirl pattern. It is often used as a ramen ingredient. Swirl is called “uzumaki” or “rasen” in Japanese. This is the name of the hero, Naruto Uzumaki. His special technique Rasen-gan also comes from here. And the origin of the Naruto-maki is the Naruto Whirlpool. This name is given because the cut section looks like a swirl whirlpool.

If you want to see Naruto Whirlpool up close, a sightseeing boat is recommended. You can enjoy cruising as close as the whirlpool splashes. There are two types, a large sightseeing boat and a high-speed underwater boat, and you can see the whirlpools of the sea up close.
